Rancilio Silvia - getting the perfect espresso

The Rancilio Silvia is our most loved and most complained about coffee machine. It's not as forgiving as other coffee machines but if used correctly it will provide years of excellent espressos.

Here are some top tips for the perfect espresso:

  • Get a TOP QUALITY grinder, preferably the Rancilio Rocky.
  • The grind required is much finer than you think. Pre-ground supermarket coffee will not work.
  • Get your dose exact. Preferably use a set of digital scales.
  • It should take 25 seconds to extract a 30ml espresso

Our sales manager, Gary Kramer, has a Rancilio Silvia. He loves it so much that he takes it on holidays. Here's how Gary gets the perfect espresso:

  • Preheat the Silvia by running hot water through the handle as if making an espresso without any coffee
  • Using scales, measure 14 grams of beans into an empty grinder. Not 13.5 grams, not 14.5 grams.
  • Grind the beans into the handle
  • Tamp firmly
  • Pour the espresso

Note: if the espresso pours too quickly then make the grind finer. Remember that this is all about consistency. Once you get the grind, dose and tamping right then the espresso will be perfect.
