If your wonderful Rancilio Silvia suddenly goes cold what should you do? This article identifies one of the common causes - a tripped thermostat. This often happens if you leave your Silvia in the "steam" position for too long.
Only qualified people should attempt this.
- Always unplug your appliances before opening them.
- Allow the boiler to fully cool down before opening the machine
If you're not comfortable doing this yourself there are repair centers available that can do it for you.
The first thing to check is that your boiler is primed. If the boiler doesn't have sufficient water it will always overheat and could possibly damage the heating element. Fill the water tank and run a couple of cups through the group handle outlet. Do this as if you were making a coffee without actually having the handle and filter basket attached.
If the water is still coming out cold you might need to reset the thermostat on the boiler. Do the following at your own risk:
- Unplug the machine, double check this step
- Allow at least an hour for the boiler to cool down
- Remove the water tank - see the large circle below, Fig 1.
- Undo the 4 screws at the top of the machine - see the 4 small circles below, Fig 1.
- Lift off the lid of the Silvia
- Admire the simple and clean internal design ;-)
- Press in the red button on the side of the boiler. See fig 2 below.
- Put the lid back on
- Do up the 4 screws
- Replace the tank, fill with water
- Test the machine
